NYC & Company Talks: Relief for Small Businesses
Please find the audio recording from our recent NYC & Company Talks: Relief for Small Businesses. This event offered valuable information and insightful dialogue on the latest government support for small businesses, including the CARES Act’s assistance programs. Thank you to our speakers, Gregg Bishop, Commissioner, NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and John Mallano, Deputy Director, New York District Office, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), for their participation.
- Applications for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) (SBA Business Interruption Loans) will remain open through June 30. The new program is available on a first-come, first-served basis, to businesses and nonprofits with 500 or fewer employees.
- How to apply: Ask your bank if they offer the federal SBA Paycheck Protection Program. If so, they should walk you through the application process. If your bank does not offer the program, here is a list of traditional SBA banks.
- To check on the status of your Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) please call the U.S. Small Business Administration at 800-659-2955.

- Commercial Lease Assistance Program website
- The Freelancers Union Relief Fund provides financial assistance of up to $1,000 per household to cover lost income and essential expenses not covered by government relief programs, including food and food supplies, utility payments and cash assistance for income loss.
- Additionally, the Freelancers Union continues to survey freelancers to gauge how Covid-19 is impacting their work and their lives. While the survey is national, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) will be working with Freelancers Union to review responses from New York City and communicate feedback to City Hall, as well as state and federal government, to inform policy recommendations.

- Determine your eligibility for more than 30 economic programs and benefits with ACCESSNYC
- If you have not already done so please fill out our Business Impact Survey so we can continue helping direct the City’s current plans and future recovery messaging.

Affirming our reputation as “the city that never sleeps,” New York City’s world-famous nightlife is a vital part of our tourism landscape. Much of its appeal is owed to the small businesses that diversify the City’s vibrant after-hours scene.
In this installment, NYC & Company hosted Ariel Palitz, senior executive director, MOME Office of Nightlife, and Gregg Bishop, commissioner, NYC Small Business Services, for a conversation about helping member businesses thrive in this competitive tourism sector. Palitz and Bishop addressed how small businesses operate and grow, explored the resources available to them from SBS and shared the initiatives of the Office of Nightlife.

Optimizing Your Google Presence

Over the course of the session members learned to improve their business' visibility on Google – specifically how to optimize their listings on Google Search and products like Google Maps and Google Trips. Members were also able to create and verify their Business Profile on Google, get and respond to reviews, add images and more.
Attendees received tactical training, a how-to guide explaining processes and a deeper understanding of best practices for using Google My Business.
