NEW YORK CITY AND MEXICO CITY SIGN PARTNERSHIP TO STIMULATE TRAVEL BETWEEN THE TWO DESTINATIONS

Renewed City-to-City Tourism Partnership Reinforces Connection Between Two Destinations—

Agreement Signed to Exchange Assets and Provide Reciprocal Promotional Support

Mexico City, Mexico (April 5, 2017) – NYC & Company—the City’s official destination marketing organization—today joined Mexico City Mayor Dr. Miguel Angel Mancera Espinosa, and representatives from Mexico City’s Ministry of Tourism to sign and renew a city-to-city partnership to boost tourism between Mexico City and New York City. NYC & Company President and CEO Fred Dixon and Mexico City’s Minister of Tourism Armando López Cárdenas were on hand to sign the tourism partnership agreement with Mayor Mancera serving as witness. The one-year alliance includes a collaboration agreement between the two destination marketing organizations, the sharing of best practices in tourism marketing and the exchange of marketing assets to boost reciprocal travel. The event took place this evening at Mexico City’s City Hall. NYC & Company signed the original city-to-city tourism agreement in October, 2013 in Mexico City.

“Today, we are proud to renew our tourism partnership with Mexico City, one of the world’s great cities. New York City and Mexico City share so much in common, and it’s important now more than ever to reinforce our commitment and do all we can to welcome the world to both of our extraordinary destinations,” said NYC & Company CEO Fred Dixon.

“The renewal of the City-to-City partnership first signed in 2013 will bring this bilateral relationship to the next step, encouraging travel both ways and continuing to share best practices, but most importantly, will strengthen the relationship between the two most important cities in North America,” said Armando López Cárdenas, Mexico City’s Minister of Tourism.

The city-to-city partnership includes a swap of marketing and advertising assets that will be activated later this year. In Mexico City, New York City tourism promotions will appear across multimedia channels while several LinkNYC kiosks and bus stop shelters in New York City will be activated to promote Mexico City tourism. As part of the agreement, New York City and Mexico City will also continue to share best practices in tourism management to increase the number of visitors between both markets in the year ahead. The two organizations will also collaborate on ways to boost travel through travel offers and incentives provided by third-party travel providers between Mexico City and New York City.

This month, in conjunction with the city-to-city partnership announcement, beginning April 25, NYC & Company is also launching an integrated marketing campaign in partnership with Best Day Travel and media partner JC Decaux. The advertisements will include the “New York City – Welcoming the World” (in Spanish: “New York City – Le da la bienvenida al mundo”) messaging and will include the promotion of a discounted air and hotel travel package plus incentives for travel from May 1 to July 31. The campaign, which will be led with out of home media across Mexico, is valued at $900,000 USD and will run from April 25 to July 3.

Mexico City Tourism will be working with its flagship airline partner Aeromexico to offer future travel incentives for visitors from New York City to Mexico City. Aeromexico was on hand at the signing ceremony today.

In 2016, New York City welcomed 449,000 visitors from Mexico, the City’s 9th largest source of international visitation.

According to DGAC (Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil) General Administration for Civil Aviation, in 2015, 669,000 passengers traveled to Mexico City using New York as a point of origin compared to 303,000 that traveled during 2014, representing a 120.5% growth year over year.
