New York City (May 5, 2015) — NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, today joined with Tourism Cares and its local membership to kick off a new Tourism Cares NYC initiative designed to give back to the local communities that keep our City vibrant.

At today’s inaugural Tourism Cares NYC event, approximately 150 volunteers will beautify St. Nicholas Park in Harlem in celebration of U.S. Travel Rally Day, a key event held during National Travel & Tourism Week. Volunteers will participate in a variety of clean-up activities, such as painting fences, cleaning up litter and planting projects around the park.

“We are delighted to launch this new local Tourism Cares NYC initiative. The businesses and people that make up our hospitality industry know that supporting the City as a livable place for New Yorkers is an important part of making it welcoming for visitors,” said Fred Dixon, NYC & Company’s president and CEO.

Each year on U.S. Travel Rally Day, members of local tourism industries are encouraged to unite and demonstrate the positive impacts that travel and tourism have on local workers, businesses and communities. To show New York City’s commitment, NYC & Company organized a group of travel and tourism industry volunteers to restore and beautify Manhattan’s renowned St. Nicholas Park in Harlem.

“NYC & Company is a strong leader for Tourism Cares nationally,” said Mike Rea, CEO of Tourism Cares. “We’re delighted that they continue to lead in developing a strong local giving network and hope this event will serve as a model for other local networks to give back in their communities nationwide.”

This year, National Travel and Tourism Week takes place from May 2-10, 2015. The nationwide campaign highlights the various ways that travel and tourism enrich communities and support economic growth. As America’s largest services export industry, travel and tourism generate more than $220 billion in travel exports and support 15 million jobs in the United States.
