New York City (January 21, 2014) — NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, announced today the release of the NYC 5-Borough Playbook, a guide to exploring beyond Times Square and Super Bowl Boulevard during Super Bowl Week. The NYC 5-Borough Playbook was created to share general information about neighborhoods and must-see attractions that are conveniently accessible by public transportation in each of the City’s boroughs. In addition, today through February 2, visitors and New Yorkers can take advantage of savings opportunities at restaurants, retailers, cultural organizations and attractions with NYC & Company’s Big-Game Deals. The NYC 5-Borough Playbook and Big-Game Deals can be found at nycgo.com/superbowl.

“New York City has proven time and again to be experts at hosting big events, and NYC & Company looks forward to welcoming all the football fans to our vibrant city,” said Fred Dixon, interim president and CEO of NYC & Company. “Winter is a great time to visit the five boroughs, and we encourage everyone in town for the big game to take advantage of our NYC 5-Borough Playbook to explore beyond Times Square and Super Bowl Boulevard and enjoy an authentic New York City experience.”

The NYC 5-Borough Playbook will be distributed at the Official NYC Welcome Center on Super Bowl Boulevard on Broadway between 43rd and 44th Streets from January 29 to February 1 and to members of the media covering the game. Information Specialists will also be on-site at the Official NYC Welcome Center to assist with directions, offer suggestions and share insider tips.

The NYC 5-Borough Playbook provides visitors with the necessary information to plan a day or afternoon exploring one of the City’s many vibrant neighborhoods. The playbook can be viewed in its entirety at nycgo.com/superbowl; a sampling of the information included follows:

The Bronx is home to the world-renowned Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium and the 1,146-acre Van Cortlandt Park. Areas highlighted in the playbook include Arthur Avenue, known for its authentic Italian fare; Fordham, the site of bustling Fordham University, New York Botanical Garden and Edgar Allan Poe Cottage; and the Grand Concourse, a famous Bronx thoroughfare where the Bronx Museum of Art is located.

The City’s most populous borough, Brooklyn, is known for its fine dining, eclectic shopping and major cultural institutions, including the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Brooklyn Museum. Neighborhood highlights include Williamsburg and Greenpoint, where visitors can eat delicious artisanal snacks and locally sourced organic treats, shop at indie boutiques and spend the night bowling at Brooklyn Bowl; Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, where cultural attractions include BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) and BRIC House; and tree-lined Park Slope, which is filled with historic brownstones and located next to Prospect Park, one of the City’s great green spaces.

Although most of the Super Bowl Week events are taking place in Manhattan, there are thousands of places to explore beyond Times Square. A short walk from Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen has risen above its fearsome name and become a gastronomic playground that is also a hotbed of experimental theater and a sizable gay community that has shaped New York’s nightlife scene. A quick subway ride uptown, Harlem is home to the famous Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum in Harlem and notable churches. And downtown on the Lower East Side, explore remnants of the City’s immigrant past at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and check out contemporary art on top of a colorful nightlife scene.

Queens is the City’s largest borough and the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world. Highlights include Astoria’s Museum of the Moving Image, Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park; Long Island City, dotted with galleries, museums and studios helping to spur the growth of restaurants, museums and hotels; and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, where visitors can experience a range of sights and cultural flavors, from the Unisphere built for the 1964–65 World’s Fair to Queens’ own bustling Chinatown.

A quick free ferry ride from Lower Manhattan, Staten Island is the City’s greenest borough. Near the ferry terminal in St. George, visitors can discover art, architecture and other hidden gems at the Staten Island Museum and honor the victims of 9/11 at the Staten Island September 11 Memorial. Nearby, Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden offers historical artifacts, gardens and performance arts, among many other things, on its 83-acre campus. And for the adventurous traveler, Tompkinsville is worth the trip; visitors can enjoy mouthwatering Sri Lankan cuisine.

In addition to promoting all there is to do and see beyond Times Square, starting today through February 2, consumers can take advantage of our Big-Game Deals at more than 70 NYC & Company member restaurants, cultural organizations, attractions and retailers. The coupons, which include discounts, bounce-back offers, buy-one-get-one-free savings, can be printed or redeemed by displaying them on a mobile phone.
