New York City (August 30, 2022)NYC & Company, the official destination marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau for the five boroughs of New York City, invites visitors and locals to participate in a diverse roster of activities to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month with 28 things to see and do in 2022. 

The organization is joining the celebration as it continues to be committed to spotlighting authentic Latino experiences across the five boroughs. From September 15 to October 15, New Yorkers and visitors will have the opportunity to experience theater, concerts, Latin jazz, art exhibitions, parades and more activities, allowing them to take a deep dive into Hispanic culture without leaving the City. National Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration through which the US government recognizes the contributions of the Hispanic community to the development of North American culture. This momentous occasion coincides with the anniversary of the discovery of America, as well as the celebration of the declaration of independence in countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile and Mexico.  

As part of its commitment to the celebration of diversity in the most vibrant city on the planet, for 2022, NYC & Company curated 28 events scheduled from September 15 through October 15. The events are organized by cultural institutions and community organizations with the purpose of celebrating diversity, folklore, cuisine and culture.

Rhythm Seeds - Semillas del Ritmo Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Greenbelt Nature Center (Staten Island)

56th Hispanic Day Parade 2022 (Manhattan)

Fifth Avenue, from 44th Street to 77th Street  

The 56th Hispanic Day Parade brings together all Latino and Hispanic nations in a parade that moves through the heart of Manhattan, passing by iconic landmarks such as Rockefeller Plaza, Central Park and St. Patrick's Cathedral.  

This year's Hispanic Day Parade will feature processions from a total of 21 countries. Participants will play folkloric music and exhibit traditions in front of an audience of more than one million spectators. 


Columbus Day(Manhattan)

Fifth Avenue and 44th Street  

Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October, and this 2022 the celebration will be held on October 10, around the date when Christopher Columbus first set foot in America. 

Every year, New York City celebrates this day with a large parade in which 35,000 people participate including marching bands, marines and floats. The event attracts about one million people and another million watch it on TV. 

The parade starts on Fifth Avenue and 44th Street and heads north to Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street.

Filomena Marturano: Un Matrimonio A La Caribeña

Directed by Leyma López. López’s Cuban adaptation of the famous Italian romantic comedy by Eduardo De Filippo, Filomena Marturano is the story of shopkeeper Domingo and his longtime live-in girlfriend Filomena. At one time, Filomena was a prostitute. She has three sons from those days, who don’t know that she is their mother.

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library (Manhattan) 

American Travelers: A Watercolor Journey through Spain, Portugal, and Mexico. Featuring the Contemporary Works of Timothy J. Clark

The current exhibition shares an underappreciated resource of the Hispanic Society Museum Department collections, the large collection of watercolors by United States artists painted in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Works by Hassam, Kuehne, Edwards, Peixotto, Robinson, Peets and Petrovic are exhibited along with a suite of recent watercolor paintings by Timothy J. Clark (b. 1951). Clark was inspired by the Sorolla in America exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art—over half of which was provided by the Hispanic Society—to conduct several campaigns in Spain and Mexico. Like Hassam and the others before him, Clark depicted monuments, interiors and cityscapes, both with figures and as compositions in themselves, as well as still lifes. His works are presented as easel-sized paintings, similar in size to oils, but executed in watercolor.

El Museo del Barrio is a museum of Latin American art located in East Harlem, New York. This area, also known as El Barrio, runs from East 96th Street to East 125th Street and from Fifth Avenue to the East River. El Museo is a must for those who want to see Latino culture from a different perspective, in the heart of Spanish Harlem. 

The museum`s permanent collection comprises over 8,000 pieces spanning 800 years of Caribbean and Latin American art, including Pre-Columbian artifacts, crafts, sculpture, drawings, photography, documentary films and video.

The tour content includes many Latin American and Spanish architects, builders, engineers and artists who have contributed to the New York City skyline, in addition to all the details of the signature AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour. It’s guided by the American Institute of Architecture allied member guide Doug Fox, who has studied Spanish language and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries for over three decades. This 2.75-hour tour will offer continuing education credits (AIA CES 1.5 to 2.5 LU HSW) to architecture students.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (Manhattan)

New York Philharmonic’s 2022-23 season inaugurates its renewed home, David Geffen Hall, with some 150 concerts. The season kicks off on October 7 with a “Concert of Gratitude,” conducted by Jaap Van Zweden, for an audience comprising emergency medical and construction workers who participated in the renovation of the hall. Two galas and an open house weekend will follow later that month. 


Kids In Motion at the Lieutenant John H. Martinson Playground (Staten Island)

This fully accessible playground offers great views, two levels of play areas for younger and older kids and an amphitheater that can be used as an outdoor classroom. Kids in Motion is a free program that engages children in outdoor activities: organized sports, games, physical exercise, board games, water games and more. No registration is required. The program may be canceled due to inclement weather or other conditions.
