NYC & COMPANY PRESENTS THE “NEW” NEW YORK CITY: MIDTOWN EDITION AT IPW 2017



—2017 Marks Banner Year for Neighborhood with New Attractions Gulliver’s Gate, National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey and NFL Experience Times Square—



Washington, D.C. (June 6, 2017) — At a press conference this morning at IPW, the travel industry's premier international marketplace and the largest generator of travel to the U.S., NYC & Company presented new destination updates and highlights of the “New” New York City: Midtown Edition to an audience of key global travel media.



At this morning’s event, NYC & Company President and CEO Fred Dixon and SVP Global Communications Chris Heywood outlined new developments and story ideas in the City’s hotels, infrastructure, attractions, arts and culture, and more. They were joined by representatives from groundbreaking Midtown Manhattan attractions Gulliver’s Gate (opened May 9), National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey (debuting October 2017) and NFL Experience Times Square (November 2017).



“The ‘New’ New York City - and Midtown Manhattan in particular - is experiencing a period of momentous growth with groundbreaking developments,” said NYC & Company president and CEO Fred Dixon. “We are proud to be back at IPW this year, showcasing the many reasons visitors should choose the City’s five boroughs now for their next holiday.”



Dixon also reinforced the organization’s international communications and marketing initiative titled, “New York City – Welcoming the World,” reinforcing the destination’s diversity and welcoming spirit. Since its launch in March, the colorful outdoor campaign has been found in key international markets including the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Spain.



New York City has the most active hotel development pipeline in the country, with 113,000 hotel rooms as of May 2017 and an expected inventory of 137,000 hotel rooms by 2019. Noteworthy hotel property openings in 2017 include 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge (opened February 2017), The Whitby Hotel (debuted February 2017), 50 Bowery (opened May 2017), MOXY NYC Times Square (coming August 2017), Public, an Ian Schrager Hotel (June 2017) and The Hoxton Brooklyn (late 2017) New York EDITION Times Square (early 2018).



This afternoon NYC & Company will host its sixth consecutive IPW Luncheon, NYC Center Stage, in conjunction with Broadway Inbound. The event will showcase live performances from Anastasia, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Blue Man Group, CATS, Phantom of the Opera and Waitress.



During IPW, NYC & Company is joined by 14 New York City travel industry partners: Alliance for Downtown New York, Carnegie Hall, Grand Hyatt New York, Hotel Edison, Morgans Hotel Group, National Geographic ENCOUNTER: Ocean Odyssey, NFL Experience Times Square, New York Wheel & Empire Outlets, NYC Airporter Transportation, Rockefeller Center, The New York Pass, Related, TravelAdvocates, and YOTEL New York.



New York City welcomed 60.7 million visitors in 2016, the City’s seventh consecutive year for record-breaking tourism, with 48 million domestic and 12.7 million international visitors. The destination is expected to welcome 61.7 million visitors in 2017.
