VANCOUVER, BC (June 2, 2014) -- NYC & Company, New York City’s marketing, tourism and partnership organization, and 12 of its tourism industry member companies will travel across Canada this week to promote New York City – America’s number one big city tourism destination – to the Canadian market, and to highlight NYC & Company member companies while expanding NYC’s reach to the Canadian travel trade. Member companies participating in the mission June 2-5 include hotels, attractions, retail, and cultural institutions and organizations offering numerous experiences exclusive to New York City. Canada is New York City’s number one international market, and last year welcomed an estimated 1,100,000 visitors.

“NYC & Company looks forward to travelling throughout Canada this week to promote travel to New York City’s five boroughs from our number one international market,” said Fred Dixon, president & CEO of NYC & Company. “The support from Canada has been tremendous in delivering visitors to the City and remains integral in helping us reach our goal of 55 million visitors by the end of 2014, one full year ahead of our 2015 schedule.”

Reagan Stulbaum, NYC & Company’s Senior Director, Tourism Development, will lead the cross-Canada mission with in-market representative Javier Fernandez, Connect Worldwide Canada. This mission also marks the first-ever country-wide media mission for NYC & Company, which will be led by Chris Heywood, Senior Vice President, Global Communications, with in-market representative Jennifer McGibbon, Connect Worldwide Canada, who will conduct a series of trade and consumer media meetings in each city.

“There is always a new experience awaiting Canadian visitors in New York City,” said Charmaine Singh, President of Connect Worldwide Canada. “And we’re excited to share these updates with the travel trade on our cross-Canada sales mission. With ongoing neighbourhood, attraction and hotel developments, New York City always has something new to discover. This year alone has marked the opening of the new 9/11 Museum in Lower Manhattan and the celebration of the 50th and 75th anniversaries of the World’s Fair in Queens. In spring 2015 Lower Manhattan’s One World Observatory is slated to open, and in fall 2016 Staten Island will welcome the New York Wheel, the world’s tallest Ferris Wheel, to name a few.”

The 12 member companies travelling from NYC will conduct sales workshops and attend events with Canadian travel trade in three of Canada’s key cities: Vancouver (June 2), Montreal (June 4) and Toronto (June 5).

NYC & Company opened a tourism marketing office in Toronto in 2007.  Since then, Canadian visitation has grown exponentially and is currently the number one international market.

In 2013, the City welcomed an estimated 1,100,000 Canadian visitors, a 31 per cent increase over the 2006 number of 840,000. Last year, New York City welcomed an overall 54.3 million visitors (an estimated 42.9 million travel to New York City domestically, while 11.4 million travel from international locations), a new all-time high and an increase of nearly 20 million additional annual tourists from 2002. By the end of 2013, visitors to New York City generated an estimated $57.4 billion in economic impact and $38.7 billion in direct spending. In addition, New York City generated a record $529.5 million in hotel tax revenue and sold more than 30 million hotel room nights in 2013, and is expected to exceed 100,000 available rooms by the end of 2014, a new milestone for the City. The overall hospitality and leisure sector currently employs nearly 376,000 New Yorkers across the five boroughs.
