CITY HAILS GIANTS WITH PARADE AND CITY HALL RALLY

New York City The skies over Broadway rained ticker tape for the first time in eight years, giving the Giants a celebration worthy of their triumphant win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

It was New York City’s first championship celebration since 2000—and the Giants’ first ring-winning victory since 1991. The festivities took place on the Tuesday after the game, and attendees were estimated at up to a million. One thing was for sure: the streets were packed, the fans were cheering and red and blue were the order of the day.

The parade traced the mile-long route along Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes, from Battery Park toward Chambers Street. Big Blue filled four floats, including one carrying quarterback Eli Manning, defensive end Michael Strahan and coach Tom Coughlin, along with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and—of course—the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Mayor Bloomberg also presided over a rally in City Hall Plaza, presenting the team’s players and coaches with a key to the City. Among the other elected officials to speak were Governor Eliot Spitzer and Senator Charles Schumer.

Behind the scenes, NYC & Company had a hand in much of the parade production, coordinating floats, printing signage and creating 50,000 fan posters that declared “This is Gigantic. This is New York City.” The organization also took responsibility for securing the parade’s financial support, working with the Giants and their team sponsors—including Toyota, Fed Ex, Continental, Pepsi and MasterCard—to cover costs and ensure no taxpayer expense.
