First Ever NYC Mayors Cup Baseball Championship To Take Place At MCU Park in Coney Island

FIRST-EVER NYC MAYOR’S CUP BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TO TAKE PLACE AT MCU PARK IN CONEY ISLAND ON FRIDAY, JUNE 18

—Public School Athletic League and Catholic High School Athletic Association Will Compete for Title of Best in New York City—

New York, NY (June 9 2010) — NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, today announced that the first NYC Mayor’s Cup Baseball Championship will be held on Friday, June 18 at Municipal Credit Union (MCU) Park, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclone’s. Two NYC Mayor’s Cups will be awarded- one to the winning team and one for the individual home run derby champion during which five players from each league will compete to see who can hit the most home runs, and every one of the 50 championship players will receive a NYC Mayor’s Cup medal. The home run derby will begin around 5:00 p.m. and the teams will be introduced at 6:35 p.m., followed by a ceremonial first pitch and National Anthem, before the 7:00 p.m. game time.

“The NYC Mayor’s Cup Baseball Championship will showcase the best high school players from the PSAL and CHSAA as they battle it out for the title of Best in the City,” said Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing Andrew Gould. “Throughout the years, New York City has produced some fantastic baseball talent and I have no doubt that the players participating in this year’s Mayor’s Cup will continue that tradition. I would also like to thank all of the parties that came together to make this exciting event happen and I look forward to watching this game grow bigger and better each year.”

Twenty-five top players from both the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) and the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) will play in the championship game. The players were all nominated by their coaches and make of the All Star team for their respective leagues. This will be the first time that these two All Star teams will compete against one another.

The NYC Mayor’s Cup Baseball Championship is the most recently added event on the NYC Mayor’s Cup roster. The NYC Mayor’s Cup Series was recently expanded to now encompass a variety of sports throughout the year including track and field, cross-country running, cycling, lacrosse, baseball, kayaking, wrestling, field hockey, rugby, chess, wheelchair basketball, and table tennis. New tournaments will continue to be added to the existing Mayor’s Cup series throughout the year; the roster now includes 12 events that draw more than 10,000 participants each year.

The NYC Mayor’s Cup series was created by NYC & Company’s Sports Marketing Department, which was formed in December 2008 as a result of the New York City Sports Commission’s integration under the NYC & Company umbrella. This integration has allowed the group to enhance the level of support that the Sports Commission provides to the local sports community and to create original sporting events across New York City’s five boroughs.
