NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and NYC & Company Highlight Culture During Broadway Strike

New York, NY (November 13, 2007) Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin and NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta today announced that the City will provide periodic highlights of the vast array of cultural options available to visitors and residents during the Broadway strike. Many musical, dramatic and other theater productions continue to run as scheduled. In addition, the concerts, dance performances, museum exhibitions and other attractions that together make New York City the premiere cultural destination in the world continue to delight audiences in all five boroughs.
The City will provide regular updates on events across the five boroughs online at the City's official website, nyc.gov, on NYC & Company's website, nycgo.com, and through 311, which can be accessed outside the five boroughs by calling 212-NEW-YORK. In addition, to help visitors accommodate any changes to their trip plans, the City has extended this week's hours of operation for its Official Visitor Information Center in Midtown Manhattan.
"New York City's cultural sector is vibrant and diverse, offering the best theater, music, dance, and art to audiences from around the corner and around the globe – including hundreds of commercial and nonprofit off-Broadway theater companies," Commissioner Levin said. "From Pygmalion at the Roundabout Theater, to The (S) Files exhibition at El Museo del Barrio, to great music at Joe's Pub, there is something for everyone to do in New York City."For visitors interested in taking in a Broadway show, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cymbeline, Mary Poppins, Mauritius, Pygmalion, The Ritz, Xanadu and Young Frankenstein remain open. In addition, Off-Broadway shows, nonprofit cultural organizations and special events, including the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, are not affected by the strike.
Diverse entertainment options abound throughout Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. For the latest information on what's happening, visitors can go to NYC & Company's website, nycvisit.com, which has recently added tools to make navigating cultural options in the five boroughs even easier."The interactive tools on nycvisit.com give users the chance to create trip itineraries that are tailored to their individual interests," Fertitta said. "They can also browse listings in culture, dining, nightlife, shopping and other categories – all of which are updated daily – to find the latest and most relevant information."Visitors and residents can also get information from counselors at the City's Official Visitor Information Center, located at 810 Seventh Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Streets. This week the center has extended its hours, and will be open from 8:30am to 7:30pm daily through Friday. The City also operates visitor kiosks centers in Harlem (253 West 125th Street), the Financial District (26 Wall Street), City Hall Park (Broadway sidewalk at Park Row) and Chinatown (at the intersection of Canal, Walker and Baxter Streets).Highlights of current options – in midtown Manhattan and beyond – include:
