NYC & COMPANY JOINS CONTINENTAL AIRLINES TO COMMEMORATE10TH ANNIVERSARY OF GLOBAL GATEWAY AT NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
—Continental’s Global Gateway is a Key Partner in New York City’s $25 Billion Tourism Industry—
New York, NY (October 25, 2007)—Before an audience of more than 100 international travel, aviation and business journalists, NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta today joined New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine, Continental Airlines Chairman and CEO Larry Kellner and Continental Airlines President Jeff Smisek to highlight the 10-year anniversary of the commencement of the airline’s Global Gateway at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The briefing showcased the importance of Newark Liberty International Airport to the New York region’s economy and underscored the importance of Continental Airlines’ Global Gateway hub at the facility.
"Continental’s hub at Newark Liberty International Airport is an important gateway for international visitors accessing New York City," said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company, the official marketing and tourism organization for New York City. "With more than 430 daily flights and service to 160 destinations non-stop, Continental’s impact on the city’s tourism economy is truly remarkable. Their continued investment in the region is critical to New York City achieving its goal of 50 million visitors annually by 2015," said Fertitta.
As the New York Metropolitan area’s largest airline, Continental Airlines serves more international destinations than any other U.S. airline and more nonstop destinations from the region than any other carrier in the world. Continental Airlines also plans to launch daily nonstop service between New York and Shanghai beginning March 2009, pending final approval.
Today’s remarks follow a series of major tourism announcements by NYC & Company this year aimed at growing New York City’s tourism sector. The agency has expanded its international presence and now operates 15 offices worldwide including Shangai, London and most recently, Sao Paulo.
In August, NYC & Company launched the "Just Ask the Locals" campaign, the New York City’s first campaign to thank and welcome visitors as well as engage local residents.
Most recently, NYC & Company launched the City’s first global, multimedia communications campaign, "This is New York City." The campaign, which can be seen in a number of markets including the U.K., Ireland, Spain, Philadelphia and Boston, aggressively promotes the City as a premier tourism destination both internationally and domestically.
