The New-York Historical Society will incorporate a museum dedicated to LGBTQ+ history. Slated to open in 2024, The American LGBTQ+ Museum will be NYC’s first museum dedicated to showcasing global, national and local LGBTQ+ history and culture.
Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center | Manhattan | 2024
The first visitor center within the national park system dedicated to LGBTQ+ history will open in New York City in 2024. The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center will honor and explore the history of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and will be located at a storefront in Greenwich Village, next door to the historic Stonewall Inn.

Five New York–based woman artists come together to share their art as an extension of themselves. Featuring work by Jaclyn Burke, Debbie Roxx, Arrianna Santiago, Jodi Dareal and Ify Chiejina, the exhibition explores aspects of culture and identity, while centering the experiences of young, Black and Indigenous artists working in an industry where they rarely see themselves reflected.
Black Is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite at New-York Historical Society | Manhattan | Through January 15, 2023
This exhibition explores the work of Kwame Brathwaite, one of the many figures behind the “Black Is Beautiful” movement, featuring 40 studio portraits and behind-the-scenes images of Harlem’s creative community.
Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe at Brooklyn Museum | Brooklyn | Through January 1, 2023
The first exhibit dedicated to 20th-century American artist Nellie Mae Rowe in NYC in over 20 years, Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe explores the artist’s radical act of self-expression and liberation as a Black woman artist living and working in the American South.

This exhibition highlights the City’s raucous and diverse food culture all while examining the various challenges of NYC’s food systems. From sustainability to equitable access to food, the exhibition explores the ways artists and designers are creating solutions to address the global and local challenges we face when it comes to the food system.
Charisse Pearlina Weston: of [a] tomorrow: lighter than air, stronger than whiskey, cheaper than dust. at Queens Museum | Queens | October 2, 2022–March 5, 2023
Charisse Pearlina Weston’s first solo museum presentation will display the artist’s new work as she reimagines and posits Black interior life as a central figure of Black resistance. The exhibition will showcase Weston’s artistic investigation into the symbolic uses of glass within architecture, media, and surveillance and the role it plays in anti-Black violence.
Someday, all this at The Climate Museum Pop-Up | Manhattan | October 8–December 22, 2022
The Climate Museum will present the premiere of Someday, all this by artist David Opdyke, an exhibition that will be paired with an inviting climate action incubator, where visitors of all ages can engage with the artwork by participating in guided opportunities for reflection, dialogue and action for better futures.
Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces at The Museum of Modern Art | Manhattan | October 9, 2022–February 18, 2023
On the third floor Edward Steichen Galleries, an exhibition highlighting Just Above Midtown (JAM) will be on displayed. JAM was an art gallery and Black space that welcomed artists and visitors of various generations and backgrounds in NYC from 1974–1986, created by Linda Goode Bryant in 1974, with a mission to create a space for Black artists to be celebrated.
The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England at The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Manhattan | October 10, 2022–January 8, 2023
This exhibition traces the transformation of the arts in Tudor England and showcases the thriving community of artists and merchants during the Tudor dynasty with more than 100 objects including manuscripts, sculpture, armor, iconic portraits and tapestries from both The Met collection and international lenders.
Straight Line Crazy at The Shed | Manhattan | October 18–December 18, 2022
Harry Potter and The Grand Budapest Hotel actor Ralph Fiennes stars as Robert Moses in David Hare’s new play, Straight Line Crazy. Presented by The Shed and London Theatre Company comes a play delving into Moses’s questionable legacy and enduring impact on NYC. Performances on December 1 and December 3 will feature American Sign Language interpretation.

For over four decades, local artists John Ahearn and Rigoberto Torres have become known for their portraits of their South Bronx neighbors. For the first time, The Bronx Museum of the Arts will host a large collection of these artworks exhibited together and showcasing the creative and loving residents of the South Bronx.
Maxwell Alexandre Pardo é Papel: The Glorious Victory and New Power at The Shed | Manhattan | October 26, 2022–January 8, 2023
Brazilian artist Maxwell Alexandre will host his first North American solo exhibition at The Shed this October showing new and existing paintings from his ongoing series “Pardo é Papel” (2017–) that depict collection portraits celebrating the prosperity, self-esteem and empowerment of Black people.
Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience | Manhattan | October 28, 2022–January 1, 2023
A new exhibition created in partnership with the National Geographic Society will open at Pier 36 this fall, commemorating the 100th anniversary of King Tut’s tomb discovery, bringing the magic and mystery of Ancient Egypt to NYC.

City of Faith: Religion, Activism, and Urban Space at Museum of the City of New York | Manhattan | November 18, 2022–TBA 2023
Opening in November, City of Faith explores NYC’s image as a secular city and focuses on the South Asian American and other communities that have faced religious profiling and surveillance. The exhibition will also focus on how religion engages the City at a public level.

Coinciding with the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria, a category 5 storm that hit Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, the Whitney Museum of American History is presenting the first major US museum survey of Puerto Rican art in nearly 50 years. The exhibition will explore how artists have been impacted by the transformative years since the storm by showcasing more than 50 artworks made over the last five years from more than 15 artists from Puerto Rico and the diaspora.

Installation, video and theater pioneer Andrew Schneider returns to BAM with a new installation focused on the intersection between technology, human connection and performance. Inspired by the Milky Way and Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Room, N O W I S W H E N W E A R E (the stars) will invite visitors through a darkened space, guided by an unseen narrator as each participant navigates through a personal and collective cosmos.
Guillermo del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio at The Museum of Modern Art | Manhattan | December 11, 2022–April 15, 2023
MoMA is presenting an exhibition devoted to the craft and process behind one of the most celebrated filmmakers of our time, Guillermo del Toro, and his first stop-motion animation film. To round out the exhibition, the museum will also be screening Pinocchio and hosting a Carte Blanche series curated by the director in 2023.

This historic site that originally housed the Fulton Fish Market in 1835 has been rebuilt to accommodate a seafood-themed market in The Seaport, by Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The first gelato shop in the South Bronx opened this summer, offering customers over 50 different hand-made flavors. The shop also offers vegan gelato, sugar-free gelato, sorbet, milkshakes and even dog-friendly flavors called “Woof-lato.”

Daniel Boulud and former Masa chef George Ruan recently opened J?ji, an 18-seat omakase restaurant, in an alcove under Grand Central Terminal. The new restaurant will serve courses showcasing seasonal ingredients along with sake and wine pairings.

A three-in-one 3,500-square-foot restaurant is opening in Williamsburg this September. The first destination, Dashi Okume, a 20-seat Tokyo based counter, is set to open mid-September. Top Chef star and Bronx native Kwame Onwuachi is returning to NYC this October with a restaurant at Lincoln Center as part of the new David Geffen Hall. Tatiana will serve Afro Caribbean fare, infused with New York influences. Menu items include braised oxtail, egusi soup dumplings and truffle-spiked chopped cheese.

The Javits Center debuted its $1.5 billion new space last May, adding 1.2 million square feet of convention space. The center also debuted new meeting rooms, a 500,000-square-foot exhibition hall, a state-of-the-art 7-acre green rooftop that is a sanctuary for area wildlife, and the largest ballroom in the Northeast.

Marsha P. Johnson State Park | Brooklyn | 2023
In February 2022, East River State Park was renamed in honor of Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender woman of color who was a pioneer of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement and a central figure in the Stonewall Uprising. The design for a new gateway for the park was recently announced, with construction beginning this fall and scheduled completion in 2023.

In February, construction began on the proposed reimagination of Hudson River Park’s northernmost concrete pier. The plans call for an elevated belvedere with river views, food concession, a playground, woodland walk and sunbathing lawn, together altering the Hell’s Kitchen recreational landscape.

Penn Station has expanded across the street to the historic James A. Farley Post Office building, where an additional entry from Ninth Avenue, nine new platforms and 17 new tracks for all Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak routes is now available. New stations to service A/C/E and 1/2/3 lines are also open to commuters.

The airport is undergoing an $8 billion transformation to a single, structurally unified main terminal with better transportation access and first-class passenger amenities. In June, Delta Air Lines opened the doors to the new Terminal C. The gleaming new terminal houses modern design elements, art installations by local New York artists, five baggage claim carousels, and a new concourse with 10 gates. The eastern concourse at Terminal B opened in December 2018, with Air Canada, American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines all operating out of the new gates. All renovations are slated for completion in 2024.
Newark Liberty International Airport | New York Metropolitan Area | Ongoing
Later this year, Newark Liberty International Airport will debut an updated $2.7 billion Terminal A, offering 33 new gates directly connected to a multilevel parking facility, and will also break ground on a new 2.5-mile elevated guideway train system, which will reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and ease traffic congestion.
