Alvin Ailey changed the form and perception of American dance when he founded his eponymous company in 1958. Today the group performs under the artistic direction of Robert Battle, dancing Ailey’s pieces—which draw inspiration from African-American life and vernacular expressions like gospel music—as well as works commissioned from a variety of contemporary choreographers.
